and Fungi in the Food Traditions of Indigenous Cascadia
"My speciality is ethnobotany ... Much
of my work is field-oriented, interviewing knowledgeable elders
of Aboriginal communities in many parts of British Columbia,
to document traditional uses, names, and perceptions of plants.
Analyzing these data and comparing information from different
regions and cultural groups has been a major focus of my research."

Comparative genomics and the aftermath of ancient polyploidization
"Comparing genome sequences from multiple species at a range of evolutionary depths allows us to learn a lot about how genomes – and species – evolve. My work focuses on genome evolution in yeast species, where we can compare some species whose ancestor underwent an ancient whole-genome duplication, to other species that were not duplicated."
