Bryological and Lichenological Section/ABLS Barcenas-Peña, Alejandrina [1], Herrera-Campos, Maria A. [2], Campos-Villa Nueva, Alvaro [3], Miranda, Ricardo [4], Luecking, Robert [5]. Diversity of foliicolous lichen on the understory and canopy of the rain forest “Los Tuxtlas”, Veracruz, Mexico. In Mexico several studies have been carried out on foliicolous lichens which produced a list of 293 species. There is also a study identifying phorophyte preferences of some species. Other works deal with the comparison of lichen diversity along an altitudinal gradient. The present study approaches the difference in foliicolous lichen species composition between the understory and the canopy of Los Tuxtlas rain forest. These strata of the forest offer to foliicolous lichens different environmental conditions such as exposition light and humidity. Specimens were collected from the understory and canopy on every tree present in an area of 80 m2 every 50 m along a 500 m transect. Light exposure and humidity were also measured at each point. Species diversity and frequency of the species for each stratum was obtained. The highest values species diversity were found on the understory. Some canopy typical species such as Logilvia gilva, Porina fulvella, and Gyalectidium minus were identified. On the other hand Porina epiphylla, Porina karnatakensis, Porina rubentior, and Strigula nitidula were the most frequent species on the understory. Finally, Gyalectidium filicinum, Gyalideopsis vulgaris, Porina subnitidula, and Tricharia vainioi were present in both strata.
