Systematics Section Berger, Brent A. [1], Sytsma, Kenneth J. [1]. Molecular Phylogenetics of the Combretaceae. The Combretaceae is a pantropical group of plants (ca. 500 spp.; 14 genera) exhibiting great diversity in habit, flower morphology and fruit type. Only two studies have explored the phylogenetic relationships within the family, and both examined broad taxonomic questions using limited sampling. We use a multi-gene approach with expanded taxa sampling to explore the phylogenetic relationships of the Combretaceae with two goals in mind: 1) confidently place the Combretaceae within the order Myrtales and 2) contribute to a worldwide phylogeny including representative taxa from all major pantropical regions.
