Developmental and Structural Section Bartlett, Madelaine [1], Specht, Chelsea [2]. CYCLOIDEA-like genes and the evolution of floral symmetry in the Zingiberales. One key aspect of floral form, from both an ecological and developmental standpoint, is symmetry. Flowers may have many planes of symmetry (actinomorphy), one plane of symmetry (zygomorphy), two planes of symmetry (disymmetry) or, rarely, be asymmetrical. The evolution of zygomorphy is considered a major event in the evolutionary history of the angiosperms and zygomorphy is characteristic of many large and successful angiosperm lineages such as Orchidaceae and Fabaceae. The monocotyledonous order Zingiberales presents an ideal system for the study of floral symmetry: there have been multiple shifts in symmetry that can be reliably mapped onto their phylogeny. Within the Zingiberales, two fundamental patterns of zygomorphy exist as a result of differential stamen suppression and staminode development. We have identified a candidate gene family that may have been recruited and adapted in the Zingiberales to generate the observed patterns of floral symmetry in the order – CYCLOIDEA/TEOSINTEBRANCHED1 (CYC/TB1) -like genes. Although previous investigators working in monocots have found only one member of the CYC-like gene lineage, we have found evidence of multiple copies in Zingiberales falling into 3 separate clades. We present a phylogenetic reconstruction of this gene family’s evolutionary history in the order. Additionally, we have assessed the expression of CYC-like genes in Zingiberales taxa and present this data in the context of floral symmetry. Log in to add this item to your schedule
