Teaching Section Baker, Stokes S. [1]. Biofuels curriculum for high school students. Faculty at the University of Detroit Mercy are developing a biofuels curriculum for the Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies (PAS) program. PAS provides interdisciplinary inquiry-based course materials for high school students. Two botany modules have been created. One module lead students through the steps needed to create grain-based ethanol and cellulosic ethanol. Students are then challenge to create ethanol from whole plant material. The second module has students determine the amount of potential energy in different plant organs using a simple calorimeter. From their experimental data, students are then asked to evaluate the merits of corn-based ethanol versus cellulosic ethanol for reducing America’s dependence on foreign sources of oil and on reducing the impact of automobiles on global atmospheric change.
