Pteridological Section/AFS Link-Perez, Melanie A. [1], Watson, Linda E. [2], Hickey, R. James [1]. Putting down routes: Biogeographic patterns in Adiantopsis Fée (Pteridaceae). Adiantopsis Fée is a small genus (ca. 30 species) of neotropical ferns in the large cheilanthoid clade of the Pteridaceae. Several members of the genus exhibit adaptations to xeric habitats, a feature that characterizes the cheilanthoids in general. However, our morphological and molecular phylogenetic study of Adiantopsis suggests that secondary radiation into mesic habitats accounts for a significant portion of species diversification, especially within the palmate clade. We will be presenting results of biogeographic analyses, including a discussion of distributional patterns of the genus and multiple colonization events into the Caribbean. Data support alternative hypotheses for diversification within the palmate clade (ca. 10 species) and we will explore the implication of each in light of the biogeography.
