Systematics Section Kruse-Pickler, David [1], Hankamp, Paul [1], Patterson, Robert [1]. Molecular phylogeny of Linanthus and Leptosiphon inferred from the non-coding chloroplast region trnL-trnF. Leptosiphon (Polemoniaceae) was resurrected as a genus by Porter and Johnson (2000) based on their phylogenetic study of the entire family, thereby extracting a group of species from Linanthus. As currently recognized, Linanthus and Leptosiphon (Polemoniaceae) contain 25 and 34 species respectively, distributed mainly in western North America with one species of Leptosiphon in Chile. Together they are characterized by a wide variety of floral morphologies, and presumably pollination modes. Bell and Patterson (2000) conducted a molecular-based phylogeny of these genera, resolving an array of taxonomic issues; however, several issues remain unresolved. Some species (Le. serrulatus, Li. viscainensis) were not included in earlier studies, and several species were sampled from single collections. Certain species of Leptosiphon having strikingly similar floral morphologies appeared non-monophyletic, while other species groups with divergent floral morphologies did form monophyletic groups. We are revisiting the phylogeny of both genera using additional markers, including the non-coding chloroplast region trnL-trnF. More robust field sampling is underway. The results of this work will yield a more complete phylogeny from which to base further research on floral evolution and pollination biology in these groups. Log in to add this item to your schedule
