Developmental and Structural Section Reuter, Makayle L. [1], Brown, Gregory K. [1]. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic leaf surfaces - Bromeliaceae subfamily Bromelioideae. Numerous species in Bromeliaceae subfamily Bromelioideae have leaves with hydrophilic adaxial, and hydrophobic abaxial surfaces. The composition of these surfaces has received limited study, and it remains unclear to what extent surface morphology or chemical composition are responsible for the hydrophilic/hydrophobic differences on the same leaf. Eight species known to have hydrophilic adaxial and hydrophobic abaxial leaf surfaces (Aechmea nudicaulis, Billbergia rosea, Billbergia stenopetala, Cryptanthus warasii, Neoregelia cruenta, Orthophytum gurkenii, Orthophytum magalhaesii, Quesnelia marmorata) were investigated with light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman microscopy. For SEM and Raman, leaf surfaces were examined with trichomes intact, and removed. No morphological differences were detected between the companion hydrophilic and hydrophobic leaf surfaces of a single leaf. Raman spectra, however, do document distinct chemical composition profiles that correspond to the hydrophilic, hydrophobic surface differences. Log in to add this item to your schedule
