Systematics Section Njuguna, Wambui [1], Bassil, Nahla [2], Cronn, RC [3], Liston, Aaron [4]. Phylogenetic analysis of Fragaria (Rosaceae) based on nearly complete chloroplast genomes. Fragaria (Rosaceae) is a genus of ca. 20 species with a primarily North temperate distribution. Ploidy levels range from 2X to 10X, including the octoploid cultivated strawberry. We present the results of a phylogenetic analysis based on nearly complete chloroplast genomes from 22 species of Fragaria. The plastomes were generated with massively parallel sequencing on the Illumina Genome Analyzer. We compare our results to previous phylogenetic studies based on chloroplast and nuclear loci, and discuss the pros and cons of “next generation” sequencing for phylogenetic analysis.
