Bryological and Lichenological Section/ABLS Carter, Benjamin [1]. Intercontinental disjunction and cryptic species in the moss genus Scleropodium (Brachytheciaceae). The moss genus Scleropodium (Brachytheciaceae) is a small group with a north-temperate distribution. The center of diversity is in California, and two currently recognized species are disjunct from western North America to western Europe. Results of ongoing molecular phylogenetic analyses suggest that two dispersal events across the Atlantic Ocean are necessary to explain the patterns of disjunction within the genus. Combined molecular and morphological analyses also support recognition of previously undescribed species from California and provide insights into convergent morphological evolution in Europe and North America. Further studies are planned to examine the extent to which fidelity to ecological niches has played a role in the driving lineage diversification and morphological change or stasis of the group on both continents.
