Abstract Detail
Bryological and Lichenological Section/ABLS O'Brien, Terry [1]. Phylogeographic patterns of Aulacomnium palustre (Hedw.) Schwaegr., with an emphasis on North America. Morphologically, Aulacomnium palustre includes numerous forms in North America, many of them not limited to any geographic region of the continent. This observed variation within the species could be due to local genotypic variation or local developmental plasticity. To better understand phylogeographic patterns in A. palustre occurring in North America, two nucleic acid sequences --- the atpB gene and adjacent atpB-rbcL nontranscribed spacer, and the ITS region --- were sequenced from more than 30 specimens. Preliminary results indicate the presence of several distinct lineages of A. palustre in North America, with geographic affinities to A. palustre found in Eurasia.
