A matK Phylogeny of Abies (Pinaceae).

Abies, the second largest genus in Pinaceae, contains 40-60 species in four geographical areas: the Mediterranean, Siberia and Northeastern Asia, the Sino-Himalayan region, and North America. The phylogeny of Abies is poorly known and expected to be confounded by hybridization and recent divergence of many of the species. Abies has not received as much attention as the two other large genera of the family, Picea and Pinus. Here we assess the overall phylogeny of Abies using sequences from the matK chloroplast gene. For a sample of 46 Abies species, the largest sampling of the genus for a molecular phylogeny, matK resolves a 4-chotomy at the base of the genus. One branch is the North American narrow endemic and morphologically divergent A. bracteata, and a second clade includes two Mexican endemics, A. durangensis and A. hickelii, plus widespread A. concolor, A. grandis, and A. magnifica. This entirely North American clade includes taxa assigned to sections Grandis, Nobilis, and Hickelianae of Farjon and Rushforth (1989. Notes RBGE 46:59). The third clade contains western North American A. amabilis plus Japanese A. mariesii and corresponds to section Amabilis. Finally, the remainder of the genus forms a clade consisting of two clades, one of which holds all Mediterranean species and sections Abies and Piceaster. The second clade, comprises the remaining 26 sampled species and includes all four major areas of the genus except the Mediterranean and sections Balsamea, Pseudopicea, and Momi. Within this large, widespread clade, Abies densa plus A. spectabilis are sister taxa, a relationship supported by morphology. Abies balsamea, A. lasiocarpa, and A. fraseri form a clade that corresponds to the definition of section Balsamea in Liu’s (1973) monograph. Generally relationships among the species within all major matK clades are unresolved.
