Systematics Section Alice, Lawrence [1], Chang, Ruby [1], Sutherland, Brittany [1]. Rubus ursinus, hybridization, and blackberries (Rosaceae). Inferring the phylogenetic relationships in Rubus (Rosaceae) have been a challenge and particularly within the subgenus Rubus (blackberries, dewberries) clade. We used multiple chloroplast DNA regions (> 6,000 characters) and nuclear ribosomal ITS sequences to address several questions associated with blackberries. It was previously demonstrated that Rubus ursinus and the Hawaiian endemic R. macraei are allopolyploids involving a raspberry as the paternal ancestor and a blackberry as the maternal ancestor. Recent results suggest that these two species may be sister to the subg. Rubus clade and not nested within it. The second notable finding is that R. ursinus is hybridizing with introduced blackberry species in California. We have detected putative hybrids between R. ursinus and R. armeniacus (Himalaya berry) as well as R. ursinus and R. cf. pensilvanicus. In both cases, R. ursinus has been the maternal parent. This undoubtedly complicates the systematics of this species and has significant implications to habitat restoration. Subgenus Rubus species are monophyletic and form three primary clades: North American, Central/South American, and European. The two American clades form a larger clade sister to the European clade which is inconsistent with the morphology-based classification. We attempted to better resolve relationships among North American species using cpDNA sequences, but variation is limited requiring additional data. Log in to add this item to your schedule
