Systematics Section Meyers, Stephen C. [1], Liston, Aaron [2]. Potential sympatric speciation within Limnanthes (Limnanthacae). Limnanthes floccosa ssp. floccosa and L. floccosa ssp. grandiflora are two of five Limnanthes subspecies endemic to vernal pools in southern Oregon and northern California. Three seasons of monitoring populations in the wild have confirmed that L. f. ssp. grandiflora is usually found growing sympatrically with L. f. ssp. floccosa and that their flowering times overlap considerably. Despite their close relationship, greenhouse crossing experiments have confirmed that their F1 hybrids are sterile. An analysis of twelve microsatellite markers, with unique alleles in each taxon, also shows no evidence of gene flow between four populations of the two subspecies. A phylogenetic analysis of all 19 Limnanthacae taxa using one nuclear (nrITS) and two chloroplast (trnL-trnF and trnS-trnG) genes has not provided adequate resolution to determine the exact relationships of the subspecies within L. floccosa. Greater resolution is expected, however, as additional chloroplast and nuclear data are gathered from massively parallel sequencing of all L. floccosa subspecies. Although preliminary, the data obtained thus far are consistent with the hypothesis that L. f. ssp. grandiflora diverged from L. f. ssp. floccosa as the result of a sympatric speciation event. Additionally, we can conclude that L. f. ssp. grandiflora should be elevated to the species level. Log in to add this item to your schedule
