Bryological and Lichenological Section/ABLS Shustov, Mikhail V. [1]. The main formation stages of the Privolzhskaya upland lichen flora. The lichen flora of the Privolzhskaya upland has been continuously developing starting from the late Paleogene. The oldest relict elements of modern lichen flora of the region are the relicts of tertiary heat-resistant broad-leaved forests of the early-middle Miocene. The lichen flora of the Privolzhskaya upland developed on the basis of the tertiary mesophytic lichen flora having been heavily influenced by ancient Mediterranean desert-steppe-xerophytic as well as tertiary South Urals mountaineous (in general sense) and European boreal lichen floras. The main factors which determined the historical processes of regional flora and vegetation development were the geographical location of the Privolzhskaya upland in the system of vegetation-climatic zones and the displacement of their boundaries in the result of climate change, tectonic and denudation processes, Pleistocene glaciers and also migration of different species groups. The Quaternary glaciers did not interrupt the processes of regional lichen flora development though effected to a certain extent its composition.
In the Holocene the lichen flora of the Privolzhskaya upland gained modern shape. The specific features of the lichens spreading all around the world and growing on the Privolzhskaya upland at present time, their relation to the relief elements of different geological age, as well as paleogeographical data allow to specify the following main stages of regional lichen flora formation: the Early – Middle Miocene, the Late – Miocene, the Early - Middle Pliocene, the Late Pliocene, Eopleistocene, the Early - Middle Pleistocene, the Late Pleistocene, Holocene.
