Phylogenetic position of Corchoropsis Sielbold & Zucc. (Malvaceae s.l.).

Recent phylogenetic researches suggest Malvaceae s.l. includes formerly Tiliaceae, Byttneriaceae, Bombacaceae, Sterculiaceae, and Triplochitonaceae. Corchoropsis is traditionally included in the Sterculiaceae and distributed in China, Korea and Japan. In Korea, three taxa – C. psilocarpa, C. crenata, and C. intermedia – have been recognized (Kim, 2007). For the species of Corchoropsis, Tang (1994) and Tang et al. (2007) recognized only one species, treating C. psilocarpa as a variety of C. crenata and C. intermedia as conspecific of C. crenata. Phylogenetic relationships among the Malvacean taxa have been studied by molecular data and evolution of their morphological characters have been re-interpreted accordingly. However, none of Corchoropsis have been sequenced for their phylogenetic position. I amplified and sequenced three chloroplast coding regions - rbcL, atpB, and ndhF- and one nuclear single copy gene xdh from C. psilocarpa and C. crenata, and analyzed together with previosuly published sequences of other Malvacean taxa. Result of the phylogenetic analyses of the three plastid gene sequences placed Corcoropsis species in Dombeyoideae, as predicted by Bayer and Kubitzki (2003). Corchoropsis formed a sister relationship with Dombeya-Eriolaena-Ruizia-Paramelhania-Trochetiopsis clade. The Dombeya-Corchoropsis clade formed a sister clade to Pterospermum-Schoutenia clade, which is distributed in South Asia, in turn. The sequence variation between the two Corchoropsis species in Korea is 8 bp for ndhF gene (2110 bp in total sequenced), 2 bp for rbcL gene (1470 bp), 2 bp for atpB gene (1420 bp), and 8 bp for nu xdh gene (1239 bp), respectively, and suggests clear genetic differentiation between them. Thus, these two species need to be recognized as distinct species, unlike the treatment of Tang (1994) and Tang et al. (2007).
