Systematics Section Ertter, Barbara [1], Eriksson, Torsten [2], Lundberg, Magnus [3], Sojak, Jiri [4]. Overview of the genus Drymocallis (Rosaceae) segregated from Potentilla s.l. The rosaceous genus Drymocallis, initially coined but not validated for the widespread European species Potentilla rupestris, was adopted by Per Axel Rydberg for 28 species in his 1908 treatment of tribe Potentilleae in North American Flora. Seminal biosystematic studies by Clausen, Keck, and Hiesey in 1940 replaced Rydberg’s treatment with three species of Potentilla (P. fissa, P. arguta, P. glandulosa) and 13 subspecies. Recent molecular studies by Eriksson et al., independently supported by anther morphology noted by Sojak, places Drymocallis in a clade with Fragaria and several other genera, separate from the clade containing Potentilla s.s. Â Resurrection of Drymocallis facilitates the appreciation of a genus with an intriguing biogeography, complex taxonomy, and high potential for evolutionary studies. Molecular studies by Lundberg et al. suggest a possible hybrid origin of the genus, with Eurasian and American species forming separate clades. Of the ca. 30 species currently recognized, some are widespread, while others are highly localized endemics. Centers of diversity include western North America, the Balkans, Crimea, and central Asia. Species-level taxonomy in North America is complicated by extensive zones of intergradation, resulting in a reliance on overly broad circumscriptions that gloss over ecogeographically significant elements, some of which merit conservation attention. Fifteen species and additional varieties are being recognized by Ertter in the pending treatment for Flora of North America, including several recently described taxa and possible novelties noted for further study.
