Hypogeous species of Pezizales from the Nothofagus forests of Chile and Argentina. Pezizalean truffles are a polyphyletic, species-rich group in the Northern Hemisphere where they provide food for small mammals and most taxa form ectomycorrhizas with diverse plant symbionts. Despite important early collections by Roland Thaxter (1906), the pezizalean truffles of South American Nothofagus forests remain mostly unexplored and undescribed. Thus far, only one native pezizalean truffle, Hydnocystis singeri, has been described from South America. During collecting expeditions in the Nothofagus-dominated forests of Chile and Argentina in 2001 and 2008, we unearthed several new and interesting pezizalean truffles. These include undescribed species of Genea, Peziza (Galactinia clade), and Ruhlandiella as well as putative species of Amylascus and Gymnohydnotrya. This assemblage of new truffles species is an interesting mix of primarily holoartic genera (Genea, Peziza) and genera previously known only from Australia (Amylascus, Gymnohydnotrya, Ruhlandiella). Here we detail the morphological features and phylogenetic affinities of these pezizalean truffles and use molecular data to show that these taxa fall within primarily ectomycorrhizal Pezizales clades. We also discuss the importance of these findings in terms of host plant associations and the global biogeography of ectomycorrhizal fungi.
