Freshwater Ascomycetes: A new genus and species in the Pleosporales (Pleosporomycetidae, Dothideomycetes) from Florida and Costa Rica.

During a latitudinal survey of freshwater ascomycetes, a new bitunicate genus was found on submerged wood and herbaceous material from North and Central Florida and Costa Rica. Based on morphological characteristics and 28S large subunit (LSU) sequence data, the new genus is placed in the Pleosporales (Pleosporomycetidae, Dothideomycetes). Phylogenetic analyses based on LSU sequences did not resolve the familial placement of the new genus. The characteristic features of this new genus are: globose to subglobose, immersed to erumpent, solitary to gregarious, black ascomata with ascomal wall composed of 4–5 layers of pseudoparenchymatic cells; broadly clavate to cylindrical, bitunicate asci; cellular pseudoparaphyses immersed in a gel matrix; and cylindrical, hyaline, one-septate ascospores with rounded apices surrounded by a gelatinous sheath that swells in water and with basal filamentous appendages at first appressed to the sheath but separating in water and forming a sub-apical fringe around the ascospore base. The type isolate of the new genus produces three antifungal nonadride analogues new to science. The new genus will be described and illustrated.
